1. What kind of safe do I need for my business?

The value of the contents will determine the type of safe you will need and your insurance carrier will advise you of the UL rating that your safe will require.

2. What are UL ratings?

Underwriter Laboratories tests safes and assigns ratings to them. Your insurance carrier will require the safe to have a specific rating based on the contents of your safe. UL ratings are as follows:

  • TL15 – Tool Resistant 15 Minutes – Front Door Tested
  • TL30 – Tool Resistant 30 Minutes – Front Door Tested
  • TL30X6 – Tool Resistant 30 Minutes – All sides Tested
  • TRTL30X6 – Torch & Tool Resistant 30 Minutes – All Sides Tested
  • TRTL60X6 – Torch & Tool Resistant 60 Minutes – All Sides Tested

3. How much coverage will an insurer give for the ratings?

Following are averages for each rating:

  • TL15 - $150,000*
  • TL30 - $350,000*
  • TL30X6 - $750,000*
  • TRTL30X6 - $1,000,000 plus*
  • TRTL60X6 - $2,000,000 plus*

* These are averages only and will vary by contents, insurer, location, and types of security equipment at the location.

4. Should I use a mechanical or a digital lock?

Digital locks are as reliable as mechanical and offer biometric access, audit trail, multiple users, time delay, and time lock capabilities. Our sales staff can analyze your daily business uses and advise the best lock for your needs.

5. What combination should I use on my lock?

As with residential locks, do not use obvious combinations such as phone numbers and addresses. Commit the combination to memory and do not write it down and leave it near the safe. Change the combination whenever an employee leaves who had access to the safe.

6. Is delivery needed for my safe?

Due to the weight and size of commercial safes they must be delivered and installed by trained crews. All of our employees are trained in house and Security Safe is fully insured and complies with all OSHA and Workmen’s Compensation regulations.

7. Should I have my safe serviced?

High security safes should be serviced on a yearly basis. Service cost is minimal in comparison the price of an opening and repair of a high security safe. Servicing should be done by a safe technician.

8. What is the difference between a locksmith and a safe technician?

Most locksmith experience is limited to door and car locks. A safe technician uses sophisticated tools and methods to overcome high security locks and systems. The safe technician attends schools and classes that teach the latest opening methods and they can also repair any safe that has been opened.

Residential


1. What types of safes do you sell?

Security Safe sells fire, burglary, gun, and data safes for home use.

2. Where should the safe be installed?

The safe should be installed closest to the area of its usage. If the safe is used to store jewelry then the master bedroom would normally be used.

3. Are all safes fireproof?

No, certain burglary rated safes are not fireproof. Safes are tested for fire or burglary or both. The safes will have labels designating their fire and burglary ratings.

4. What kind of safe should I buy?

This is determined by the value of the contents you are storing. The more valuable the contents, the higher the UL burglary rating you will need. If fire is your main concern, you would need a fire safe with a 1 or 2 hour fire rating.

5. What is the difference between a digital and a mechanical lock?

A mechanical lock employs a 3 number dial that is turned to the opening combination. If the combination needs to be changed it must be done by a qualified technician. The digital lock employs a push button dial that uses a series of numbers to open the lock and is powered by batteries. The combination can be changed by the user. Generally digital locks are easier to use, open quicker, and allow user combo changes.

6. What combination should I use on my lock?

Do not use obvious combinations such as phone numbers and addresses. Commit the combination to memory and don’t leave it written down near the safe.

7. Can I install my own safe?

A lightweight safe can be set anywhere but for the best protection our crews will deliver, install, and secure your safe.

8. Can I put a safe on the 2nd floor?

Weight of the safe and home construction are the determining factors. Safes up to 1,000 lbs. can safely be placed on a 2nd floor that has adequate stairs and floor reinforcement. Normally a site survey will be required for upstairs delivery.

9. Will a fire safe protect photographs and computer data?

No, a standard fire safe will protect paper products only. Due to the high heat and humidity of a normal fire, photos and data should be stored in a data safe that does not allow the interior temperature to exceed 125 degrees.

10. Should my safe be bolted down?

Any safe that can be carried should be bolted down. Our installation crews will deliver, install, and secure your safe to prevent removal.

11. Does my homeowner’s insurance cover my safe contents?

No, it does not. Your insurance carrier will require insurance riders on jewelry or other valuables even though they are stored in your safe.
